Curriculum Vitae
The Scientific Responsible for the Research Unit is Professor of Physical Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pavia. His research work for more than four decades has been mainly in the field of Physical Pharmacy, with particular interest in the study of the solid state of pharmaceuticals (polymorphism, pseudopolymorphism, amorphism, isostructurality, co-crystal) and its biopharmaceutical and technological implications (phase transitions, stability, compatibility, physical properties of powders and tablets, etc.). His scientific and technical expertise concerns the thermoanalytical techniques of pharmaceutical application (DSC, TGA, TMA, HSM), in particular the study of solid-state interactions of drugs with additives such as cyclodextrins, maltodextrins, and polymers.
Current specific research interests include structural investigations of polymorphs, pesudopolymorphs and isostructural solvates of tetroxoprim and his molecular complexes (co-crystals) with sulfonamides and a tetroxoprim homologue, brodimoprim, the study of the crystalline and non crystalline state of drugs and excipients related to the mechanical activation process in technological operations, the investigation of pharmaceutical hydrates, in particular their behaviour toward dielectric heating (microwaves), thermal and structural characterization of large-ring cyclodextrins (delta, epsilon, iota) and hydrophobic derivatives of native cyclodextrins (peracetyl alfa, beta, and gamma cyclodextrin), studies of cyclodextrin-drug-salt forming agent ternary systems (e.g., hydroxypropyl beta cyclodextrin, naproxen and arginine), studies on solid-state interactions and prolonged drug delivery of vancomicyn and teicoplanin in binary combinations with peracetylated alfa-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins.
He has more than 100 scientific publications and as many conference papers (proceedings, oral or poster presentations) in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, physical pharmacy and biopharmacy.

Research Interests
Solid-state chemistry: studies on drug polymorphism, pseudopolymorphism, amorphism, isostructurality and co-crystals.
Structural, thermal and technological properties of pharmaceutical hydrates.
Phase transitions, physical chemical interactions and compatibility in drug combinations and technological operations.
Thermodynamic, structural, biopharmaceutical and technological aspects of drug-cyclodextrin and drug-maltodextrin interactions in the solid state and in solution.
Physical chemical characterization of large-ring cyclodextrins.
Improvement of drug properties and modulation of drug release using cyclodextrins.
Site-specific, prolonged release of glycopeptide antibiotics.

Present projects
in progress PRIN 2006: Optimization and modulation of local release of antibiotics to the colon and in deep-seated bone infections.

Expertise
Preparation and solid-state characterization of pharmaceuticals (polymorphism, pseudopolymorphism, amorphism, isostructurality and co-crystals) using thermal analysis, X-ray diffractometry, FT-IR spectroscopy and dissolution rate tests (intrinsic dissolution rate, dispersed amount).
Preparation and characterization of drug-cyclodextrin binary systems and drug-cyclodextrin-additive (polymer or salt-forming agent) ternary systems in the solid state (inclusion complexation/solid-state interaction/amorphisation) and in solution (phase-solubility diagram, thermodynamic parameters, etc.).
Improvement of drug properties and modulation of drug release by solid-state manipulation of the active ingredient or by solid dispersion with hydrophilic (e.g., hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin, PVP) or hydrophobic (e.g., peracetyl derivatives of alfa, beta and gamma cyclodextrins) carriers.
