The scientific responsible of the Research Unit is Full Professor in Pharmaceutical Technology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Sassari. His research experience in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology and of controlled release dosage forms is of more than fourteen years. More particularly his research activity dealt with topics such as improvement of the dissolution rate of drugs poorly soluble in water, preparation of compressed hydrophilic matrices for the constant release of drugs, formulation of drugs with pH-dependent solubility, design and preparation of pharmaceutical dosage forms for the pulsatile release of circadian drugs, study of the degradation processes of biodegradable drugs, study of bioadhesive systems. An important part of his research activity deals with the preparation, in vitro characterization and in vivo application of microspheres. The microparticulate drug delivery systems were intended for different routes of administration such as oral, ocular, parenteral, nasal.
He is author of more than 80 scientific publications, 5 patents and 130 congress communications (oral or poster presentations) / proceedings. He is member of the Controlled Release Society and of A.D.R.I.T.E.L.F. (Associazione Docenti e Ricercatori Italiani di Tecnica e Legislazione Farmaceutiche). He is Director of the Scuola di Specializzazione in Farmacia Ospedaliera of the University of Sassari.
